Ubud Restaurants

Where and What to Eat in Ubud

Ubud restaurants at first glance may seem to comprise mostly of local diners offering traditional dishes of the region. Ask for the all-time Balinese favourite of spit roast pig, called 'babi guling' in the local tongue or the slow cooked whole duck of 'bebek betutu'. However nowadays, Ubud has more creative restaurants that are worth a visit, featuring international to fusion menu items. Cafes and delicatessen also abound.

Sample some of the fine food and excellent services offered by Ubud restaurants situated along Jalan Raya Ubud, Jalan Monkey Forest, Jalan Sanggingan and Sayan for some real dining treats. For backpacker options, Ubud offers well-presented refreshments in roadside warungs and simple cafés.

Ibu Rai Bar & Restaurant

Ibu Rai Bar & Restaurant was only a small warung (food stall) on Monkey Forest Road back in the 1960s and was mostly frequented by travellers who came by to taste Ibu Rai’s delicious, cheap, healthy food. Nasi Ayam Kedewatan Bu Mangku

The Kedewatan main road in fact is lined up with many warung diners that serve the typical Balinese style chicken rice or nasi ayam, yet it is this one warung that has been widely recognized and maintained a good reputation. With queues and parking issues aside, the warung offers a hearty and spicy Balinese meal.

The mix includes typically Balinese spiced chicken shreds, chicken and fish satays, succulent deep-fried crispy chicken skins, half slice of boiled and sambal-topped egg, together with shredded coconut and chopped yardlong beans and salted roast nuts. The portioning takes place at the counter as you order, making possible for personal preference of your plate contents - especially in terms of sambal, as some like it hot, while others request for just a little or "no sambal" at all.

The dining area is actually the makeover of the owner's Balinese house compound, with tables and chairs in several separate pavilions. Lesehan or sans-chairs style dining is also available on tatami mats.
